When it comes to playing poker, you would no doubt hear people telling you how one player is so good at bluffing while the other one usually wears his heart – and cards – on his sleeve all the time. No doubt, they’d also tell you that it would be heaven to go against the latter type of poker player as you’re sure to win almost every round. On the other hand, when you go against the former type of poker player, it’s quite hard to decipher what he’s thinking and what poker hand he’s holding so if you still have a chance to step away from the table, do so. But if you want to learn from the best then that means jumping on the same bandwagon and playing against them. Sure, you may lose a lot of money in the process but the knowledge and experience you’ll gain from playing poker against the best of the best is surely worth it.
The first step when it comes to gauging your opponents is learning the different types of poker players there is. There are four major classifications of poker players and there could be combinations among the four but no matter, knowing and understanding each type of poker player would already provide you with an advantage over other players with less skill when it comes to gauging your opponents.
The four types of poker players are as follows:
The calling station is the term used to refer to first-time poker players. They call almost all the bets they’re faced, hence the name. If you’re against a calling station and you’re not one yourself, winning against them is as easy as taking a candy away from a babe. I’m sure you remember the times when you were the babe yourself. And now, it’s time to switch roles (insert evil laughter).
Seriously though, moving on to the next type of poker player, we come to players referred to as mouse or mice. These poker players are very much allergic to risk. They will only bet on the poker hand they’re holding when they’re 99.99% sure that they’re going to win. I believe that most mice are the type to be quiet and highly tense so if you notice a player fitting the description, you know what to do.
The third type of poker player is called the maniac. Sounds bad, isn’t it? I do hope you’re not this type of poker player but if you’re not so sure, here are the common characteristics of a maniac poker player: he always raises the bet to mind-boggling proportions simply so he could intimidate players into folding.
And lastly, there’s the rounder – the best poker player in the table. Don’t go against them, I beg you, until you have a variety of playing strategies to depend on.
